21 Awesome Bunk Rooms

This first week of the New Year, as we continue dreaming and designing our home on the lake, we are going to take a look at some ideas to inspire our own Bunk Room.

This Blog was originally started so I could take you with me on my journey as we custom build our dream home. So once a week, I will be posting inspiration, ideas, tips, tricks and more as my husband and I press forward on this massive project. I hope you will comment and enjoy the journey with us. We are glad to have your advice and opinions along the way!

Bunk Rooms Keep Them Coming Back!

The idea of the bunk room for us is a place where our grandchildren will be able to stay together yet separate in one large room. Grandchildren can multiply quickly! At this time we only have one, but we have 3 children and if they each had 3, well you get the idea. We have friends who are at 9 already.

We love to hang out together as a family. Our family plays games, has quirky traditions and this year we are going to try camping together! But the reality is you would never have bedrooms enough for parents and children all to have separate quarters. So the Bunk Room is a grand idea.

I love it because the kids will feel like they are on holiday which is what it should feel like when you are staying at Dovie and Pops (Grandma and Grandpa’s)! We also want it to be a place that they can hang out in and play as well. As they grow, it will still work out well into the teen years.

Our Bunk Room Vision

We see a large room with bunks built in on 3 walls if needed. We have not yet decided how many beds we will go for. Our vision includes an airy light colored room that is bright with large windows. A media area with seating perhaps bean bags on the floor will be a great place for movies and video games giving them their own place to hang out and play.

The inspiration photos I have selected for this post are ones that speak to that vision. Some may have only one detail that really wows me, while others offer a feel that compliments our vision.

There are many, many more ideas in lodge style and dark wood and they are gorgeous, but as this is the journey to help us pick our dream home, I have to stay focused as hard as it is on just the style we are looking at.

Enjoy the Bunk Room Inspiration!

This Bunk Room is styled to shine! The moldings add to the rich character. Bookcases at the foot of each bed for storage. Individual lighting, a little decor and curtains to pull for privacy make these bunks something an adult may be wanting to snuggle up in.

Family Retreat

This next one could be great for a family. I love the style of the top over the queen beds. I am a fan of color but there is too much in this one for what we had in mind as well as the wood trim on the windows and doors being dark. But in white, with some brighter bedding, I am all in!

This one is one of my favorites. I love the white. The vaulted ceilings are amazing. I can’t be certain, but it even looks like there are trundles beneath the lower beds that can pull out to sleep on as well.

Another airy and bright room. This one has a stair case instead of a ladder which I really like. I am also in favor of the guard rail on the top bunks.

The kids will feel so special in this room. Similar style as most but the color, trim and boards along with the windows make this custom built bunk wall fabulous!

I love the colors and the numbers of beds here. I would prefer a vaulted or super high ceiling and a larger space in the floor, but bunks can fit in hallways and closets, so they are totally a space saving option for more sleeping quarters.

A little nautical will get me every time. The rails on the step ladders are a great feature and the overall look is peaceful. Padded headboards and sides are also a great dual feature for style and comfort.

Color and ceiling interest make this a happy room to me. Sleeping for 8 and a great middle space would be a wonderful grandkids space.

Love the contrast of the white shiplap and the rugged hewn timbers. The rails, handles and ladders are amazing. How many levels is this? Three for sure, but I think maybe four~

Loving the woodwork on this room again and of course the nautical style. I wish I could see the floors better, they look very interesting.

Not the typical bunk layout and I am not certain whether I am for a lower queen or full bed because typically teens won’t sleep together and so you end up losing room in the room. But at the same time I think it really has a style all its own and kids would love it.

What caught my eye here was first the names over each bed. Kids love having something to call their own and that would make it super special. Next the sliding ladder on the metal rail allows you to have only one ladder two uppers, not sure if it is easy for the person on the next block to grab and move towards them. Last, I love the large arch to go into the sleeping area and the porthole window from one room to the other, allowing a view from the top bunk.

My favorite detail here is probably obvious…the rope. I am just in love with the texture, contrast and the feel the rope provides.

Loving the ceilings inside the bunks as well as the one just outside of them. The ladders also look like they move easily.

These are unique in that they are built further inland behind a wall making room for a built in side table.

The sliding doors and repeated pattern on the top bunks make this bunk room a winner. In love with the floor. Hands down a favorite for me.

Portholes, rails, and a dark ceiling are all appealing details in this bunk room.

Another very intriguing ceiling and a traditional built in bunk area.

As we hope to have a grand view of the lake from our bunk room, this view inspires me. I love the windows on the lower bunks and the color of the beds. Looks airy and roomy for play while sleeping 4.

The concept of this more contemporary custom built in still shines in white. My color choices would not be black and orange, though I love the window shades and the fact that each bed has its own window! Storage, light and guard rails along with the privacy of the curtains is something I am loving.

Love the colors intros room, the windows and the oars on the upper beds. Ceilings must be high since the ceiling fan is no where near the top bunk and that is an issue sometimes when putting bunks in a normal height ceiling room.

  1. I love the 4th one!!! I like the crisp clean look of the white paired with the grey and blue <3 and I love the steps in the middle to get up to the upper bunks. Good luck on your own bunk room, you are right grands multiply quickly once you start having them. We are up to 6 🙂

  2. Debbie, these are all awesome and kids would love every one of these!! I don’t know why, but the one by Stephens Design Group, Inc. just stands out to me. There’s something about those ladders that makes me feel like you are on a boat. I’ve got to say though again, they are all winners.

    1. It is hard to pick a favorite. I love a little something or a lot about each of them, though non totally capture the vision I have in my head.

    1. Thanks Laurie! I would love to have gone to a room like that and stayed with my cousins when I was little. The closest thing I remember was an attic bedroom that three cousins who were sisters all lived in. I loved it so much!
