“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11
I recently posted something that was disappointing to me
and I was overwhelmed by the encouraging words sent from complete strangers.
I was reminded not only of the power of words to bless others but the power to hurt.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”
Proverbs 18:21
The old saying, “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” is a lie.
“Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,
but only what is helpful for building up the one in need
and bringing grace to those who listen.”
Ephesians 4:29
“But I tell you that everyone will have to give account
on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.”
Matthew 12:36
“We speak before God in Christ, and all of this,
beloved, is to build you up. For I am afraid that when I come,
I may not find you as I wish, and you may not find me as you wish.
I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, rage,
rivalry, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder. “
2 Corinthians 12: 19b -20
“So then we pursue the things which make for peace
and the building up of one another.”
Romans 14:19
The next time we are tempted to gossip, let us be reminded of God’s Word on the words that come from our mouth.
Be quick to encourage and comfort one another.
Lord, please forgive me for all of the unwholesome talk that has left my mouth in my life.
I cannot imagine how tall that mountain would be.
I am sorry and want to have a guard on my tongue.
Please help me to always be ready with an encouraging word for others.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
