Day 34 Lent Devotion

“Do nothing from rivalry or conceit,

but in humility

count others more significant

than yourselves.

Let each of you

look not only to his own interests,

but also to the interests of others.”

Philippians 2:3-4

Today’s culture message

is more about making yourself great,

getting ahead,

becoming famous.

Not much is said

about looking out

for the interests of others.

There are some that do

and I am grateful to know many.

But it is difficult

to aspire to humility

because it is almost the opposite

of what we are being encouraged to do.

Jesus had it all.

There is no one above or equal to God.

“Who, existing in the form of God,

did not consider equality with God

something to be grasped,

but emptied Himself,

taking the form of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man,

He humbled Himself

and became obedient to death

—even death on a cross”

Philippians 2:6-8

Jesus was mocked,

while being tormented

and put to death

in the most shameful manner of all.

All of this underserved.

A punishment we were suppose to have

but He took our place.

This was humility in full display.

He didn’t have to do it.

He could have stopped it.

But He willingly endured it.

So He could pay our debt.

“just as the Son of Man

did not come to be served,

but to serve,

and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Matthew 20:28

The Lord asks us to live

as a servant

and to be humble as well.

“But whoever would be great among you

must be your servant,

and whoever would be first among you

must be your slave,

even as the Son of Man came not to be served

but to serve,

and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Matthew 20{26-28

“The greatest among you shall be your servant.

Whoever exalts himself

will be humbled,

and whoever humbles himself

will be exalted.”

Matthew 23:11-12

Lord, pride is sin and we have it in abundance.

Teach us humility,

help us to live thinking others better than ourselves

and teach us to serve.

In Jesus Name, Amen.
