“About the ninth hour
Jesus cried out in a loud voice,
“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”
which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Matthew 27:46
Jesus had at that moment
taken on every murder, lie, adultery, theft,
every single sinful act of every person who had lived or was yet to live.
He bore the debt we owed
and there was only one thing God the Father could do at that moment
and it was to let Jesus pay that price.
“God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us,
so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” 2 Corinthians 5:21
As a spotless lamb was offered as a sacrifice from the priests to God to atone for their sin,
Jesus had become that Lamb on behalf of the world.
“Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him,
and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed” Isaiah 53:4–5
These words from Matthew today are haunting to me.
Jesus was both God and Man.
So at that moment, the God, Jesus could have taken Himself off the cross
and wielded power over all who were mocking and tormenting Him.
“The reason the Father loves Me
is that I lay down My life in order to take it up again.
No one takes it from Me,
but I lay it down of My own accord.
I have authority to lay it down
and authority to take it up again.
This charge I have received from My Father.”
John 10:17-18
“Are you not aware that I can call on My Father,
and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?”
Matthew 26:53
“Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.” John 2:19
Jesus humbled Himself to death for us.
“But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God,
And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.”
Isaiah 59:2
There is no measure to comprehend what Jesus willingly did for us and the torment He bore for our sake.
Lord, never let me forget Jesus sacrifice. I ‘ll never know the price He paid. Thank you.
What a Beautiful Name it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQWFzMvCfLE
