At first glance I would imagine that you would wonder how in the world the 2018 Pantone color of the year, Ultra Violet, will ever be incorporated into your life.
Well hold on because it already has been incorporated and I am certain that before the year is out, this color will have found its way into your home too!
First, the color as featured by Pantone
What do you think of it?
How would you imagine it used?
I know I don’t want to see it on my walls. Though I could see it as a gorgeous velvet tufted side chair in a room with pale gray walls and white fluffy rug.
So before I give you ideas of how to incorporate this color into your home, let’s take a look at how it has already been incorporated into our lives. This post does contain affiliate links. That means if you make a purchase, I get a small commission and you pay nothing more. Thank you!

The Kitchen
Yes, definitely the kitchen!
Makeup
Outer Wear
Is it growing on you? Marketing is kind of sneaky. The more you see products you love in this new color, the more you begin to soften to it, even if you didn’t like it! In fact, soon, you will not only accept it, but before long you will find yourself desiring it. To be quite honest, I was so disappointed when I laid eyes upon it this year. I thought “come on, we just had purple. In fact, we have been bouncing back and forth between greens and purples for the past few years.” That was not true however.
Emerald Green, which seems like just last year to me, was actually 2013 and Radiant Orchid (soft purple) was 2014. This past year was Greenery and now we are Ultra Violet. So in between there was Rose Quartz and Marsala.
Now that I have been perusing all of the items and there are so many more, the color has more than grown on me. I love it. But I am interested in where you are with it. I look forward to your comments.
Why Incorporate the Pantone Color of the Year Ultra Violet
Seriously, is it really important for you to use this color? It will be replaced next year with something new.
No, you don’t HAVE to use Ultra Violet, but here are a few reasons you may choose to.
- You love it! It is your Signature Color and you have waited for this moment in time (Melanie!) for your favorite color to be made into everything imaginable. Go for it.
- You want your home to look updated and so using this color in each room and your wardrobe will give that fresh and current feel to your home and you.
- Let’s face it, the industry has already made everything in this color and designed things to go with it so it is safer and easier to go with the flow.
How Can You Incorporate the Pantone Color of the Year Ultra Violet into Your Home
Every room in your home can have a pop of Ultra Violet if you want it. However, unless it is your Signature Color, be careful not to invest in large pieces or expensive pieces as you may wish to remove that color in 2019.
The Kitchen
This is an easy room to add the color of the year in many or few ways and with a budget.
Look at placemats, napkins, towels, a rug, table cloth, flower arrangement, luncheon plates trimmed out in the color. If you are really wanting to impact your kitchen with the color of the year, get those utensils, a toaster and can opener and you will have everyone stunned at your smart looking and trending kitchen.
The Family Room
My go to item for seasonal and holiday touches is always Pillows. So if you have a neutral sofa, pillows would be the best way to bring the color into your room. Other ideas are candles, an area rug, as I mentioned earlier a side chair if you love it, a piece of art and glass.
The Bathroom
We don’t typically have too much decor in our bathrooms but at the same time it is the one room in the home where people don’t get scared away when you get a little out of the ordinary. As we have seen for the past 10 years, wallpaper has made a big comeback and the first place people began testing it out was the bathroom. This would be a super fun way to add the color to your home.
Isn’t that fun?
Of course, towels, soaps, and decorative art, floor rugs will all bring the color into the bathroom in a much less permanent way. Don’t forget to use lavender bath salts and purple bubble bath to add those pops of color.
The Bedroom
I believe by now you already have this down. You know what you could purchase for the bedroom, right? Pillows, bedspread, curtains or candles, lampshades, and area rugs.
What Are Your Plans?
Are you planning on using Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year? If so, please share in what ways.
We close on a new home this week. When we were picking out our countertops for the kitchen, the original granite actually had a splash of this in it sort of subtly. But after selecting it all we could think about was the white quartz with flecks of gray and so had I known perhaps I would have kept our first choice.
I have a clean slate for the most part. This home is smaller than our current and a lot of our current furniture won’t fit, so I was envisioning a fresher, brighter palette. I am definitely intrigued. Once we take ownership we will be working on it before moving in, so check out my youtube channel at the end of January and see if I have uploaded anything yet. Ultra Violet here I come~

I think Ultra Violet isn’t bad in small doses, but I am like you, I couldn’t imagine on a wall or a big piece of furniture. My MIL would love it though, purple is her favorite color!

Watch us both grow super fond before the end of the year…marketing magic!
Michelle Meyer says
Great post! I can’t wait to incorporate this color.
Debbie says
Thanks Michelle, do you know how you plan to use it?
Janet says
Purple is such a bold and regal color that would make anyone feel like a queen!
Debbie says
That is certainly a great perspective!
Denise Bryant says
It’s one of my favorite colors but I couldn’t have big doses of it in my house. Great post Debbie.
Debbie says
Denise, thank you. I can imagine a bold and eccentric designer having a fantastic home using this color. You know back in the day when wall paper was common to every room in every home, I had pretty bold taste. I remember people wondering if I would tire of it and I didn’t. If I had a home for every new trend to decorate…not to pay for…that would be dreamy! Thanks for stopping in.

I thought last year was green, so green was 2013? Where have I been LOL? I’ve always liked purples and lavenders, so it would be fun to work around this color if I had a clean palette. Agree with you about the powder bath being a place you can get a little wild if you want. It’s the only place in the house where we have wallpaper. And I like it, but it’s sure not purple. But those kitchen appliances now! How fun they would be in purple….OK, ultraviolet.
Debbie says
Florence, it was green last year but not Emerald…that one was 2013. Last year was a more spring green, the name at this moment is escaping me…I want to say Greenery, but I believe it is named in my post. The one thing that is important when I work with clients is to keep a flow through a home, so if we do up that powder room with Ultra Violet, we have to have a hint of it sprinkled throughout the home. If money were not an object, and I was in a more neutral home, I would have a lot of fun with this one too! Thanks so much for chatting.

Purple is my favorite color but not in the home decor arena.. Purple clothing and accessories are an entirely different story.
Debbie says
Of course it is your favorite color! I definitely see this as a bold statement by the industry. They seem to want to push us at times out of comfort zones. But if they don’t, we may not spend money on items like those pictured just to update.
Toni | Small Home Soul says
Purple has been my favorite color since I was a teen. I don’t use it much in my house because of my hubby but I know I can sneak some pieces in here and there 😀
Debbie says
Toni, I’m laughing because I just answered Mary that I keep finding out this is so many women’s favorite color! I hope you share it if you sneak it in. Thank you for spending some time here today.
Mary says
That is one vibrant color Debbie. I don’t know if it is for everyone but it certainly can be used as an accent color to great effect.
Debbie says
You are so right, Mary! DEEP and BRIGHT. It will be interesting to see how it sells. What I am hearing though, is that purple is the favorite color of a whole lot of people…even though they are timid about using it in decor. Thank you, Mary, for visiting today.
Rebecca Elizabeth Parsons says
That is my favorite color, so I ma happy dancing!!! The perfect blend of hot and cold, red and blue. Yummy. It makes me sing when I shop. That KitchenAid!!!
Debbie says
Yes, Rebecca, that Kitchen Aid…it is stunning! So happy for you. I want to see what you do with it this year.

Hi Debbie! I tried purple years ago in a set of queen sheets. I used the heck out of those sheets and they NEVER FADED… EVER! I was hoping they would soften to more of a lavender color but they wouldn’t, so they were donated at some point or became dropcloths for painting, I’m afraid. I DO have a friend who absolutely loves the color purple and she had towels, transferware ironstone china with purple and lavender pansies on them, in lovely shades of this hue. Her walls were painted a darker lavender/almost purple with alternating vertical stripes of sealer mixed into a second can making every other stripe darker and shiny ~ her dining room/living room was STUNNING done this way!!! If it is truly back, Ladies, DON’T be afraid to paint your walls especially if you own a Victorian or have a lot of turn-of-the-century {19th into 20th} period or repro. furniture. Purple is beautiful on walls!!! Anyway, there’s my thoughts on purple and if I had any of my photos here I’d whip one out and share my friend’s former home’s purple walls with you all! <3
Debbie says
WOW. Barbara what a great comment! I actually used some dark colors on my dining room walls about 25 years ago and they were gorgeous….there was a little purple in it and green and blue and pink, it was wallpaper. I had never even considered the fading. That is amazing. I would love to see a home done up in it. You know my new tag line is Live Life Colorfully! I shouldn’t be so afraid of it myself! thanks so much for stopping in and sharing
