I can hardly think of anything I love more than gathering a few pieces of luggage and tossing them in the trunk and starting on a road trip to a romantic destination with my husband. We love our time on the road as much as our destination time!
I choose February not just because it is Valentines Day, yet what a great excuse, but because it is just in the middle of nothing. The holidays are long past and Spring is still far off ~ you just need a little pick-me-up to refresh and get through the rest of the winter.
This was one of my first posts and so many of my newest readers will not have seen it, so I am re-releasing it. If you want to go Romantic, this is it!
- My first pick is The West Baden Springs Hotel in French Lick, Indiana
Having never even heard of it before, my husband and I were looking separately last year for somewhere to go and we both ended up with this as our top pick. We loved it so much, we spent 5 nights over Valentines Day and returned for a different season and spent 5 nights over Labor Day.
We entered late, I believe it was 1 am. When I walked into the atrium I literally caught my breath. The ceiling was a stained glass dome and it was lit up in this spectacular blue. I had never seen anything as beautiful before.
I had reserved a Balcony Room which opens up into the atrium and you can hear the cello or violin, harp or piano off and on throughout the day. You can people watch and just indulge in the ambiance of this Historic Landmark.
I also ordered Roses to the room, Champagne and Chocolate Covered Strawberries!
As with any fine Romantic Getaway, this one had two lush robes for us to wrap up in. There is room service available and some world-class restaurants on site between the two hotels…yes, the French Lick is also owned by the same family so they have shuttles or a trolley to take you back and forth. Once you park, you can forget your vehicle. They will take you anywhere in town.
If you have a special occasion that you are celebrating and you make reservations at 1875 Steak House they have a special place they seat you. It happened to be my birthday and we got this beautiful spot. My pictures will never do it justice.
There is golf, stables, bicycles, shopping, a casino, indoor and outdoor pools, but many hotels and resorts have all that. What is special here is the HISTORY. If you love to learn about the past of a place you can take a tour. Ours was private because in the middle of the week there are usually just a handful of people there in the winter. I loved it. This place has a magical history that involves travelers from all over the world, celebrities, and gangsters. Several of the Spring Houses are still standing.
The Spa while amazing features some unique services that you won’t find in many other hotels. They have mineral baths using the water that made them famous. You will go into a tub that has two faucets, one from regular treated water and the other straight from the springs. It is black. It smells like rotten eggs. I had them add lavender to mine to diminish the smell.
Our favorite place to sit was the library in the winter. We would gather our books or laptop and go into this gorgeous large room with sofas, chairs, tables, floor to ceiling windows, books, and a burning fireplace. In the summer, the large covered porch has lots and lots of rockers and we got ice cream and sat there every day just rocking and looking out over the gardens.
This is truly a romantic getaway. A secret treasure that is tucked away in the middle of Forests along the South border of Indiana. Check it out for yourself. The West Baden Springs Hotel at French Lick.
If you have stayed here or have another romantic getaway to share, I would love to hear about it.
